Ten Card Celtic Cross
Introduction
The Celtic Cross is one of the best known traditional tarot spreads, valued for its depth and nuance. It offers a multi angle view of a situation by examining the present dynamic, recent influences, what is developing next, and the conscious and unconscious forces shaping the moment. It also considers your role, external conditions, emotional investment, and the overall trajectory.
This spread is best for layered questions, such as relationships, major decisions, life transitions, or repeating patterns. Because it is comprehensive, take your time with it. Read position by position, then step back and notice how the cards speak to one another across the full layout.
Instructions
Choose a meaningful question. This spread works best for complex situations rather than quick yes or no questions.
Shuffle the deck thoroughly while holding the situation in mind.
Cut the deck when you feel ready.
Lay out ten cards in the Celtic Cross pattern.
Use the positions below to keep each card in its role.
Read in layers. Begin with the central cross to understand the core situation, then let the remaining cards add context and perspective.
Look for repeating themes and patterns across the spread. The Outcome card reflects direction based on current momentum, not fixed fate. It can shift with awareness and choice.
Optional: draw one additional card asking, What is the best next step right now?
Positions in this Spread
1
Position 1: Central Issue
The card in this position of the spread reflects the central issue or the heart of the situation—where you are, what’s most active, what the reading revolves around, or defining right now. It sets the focus for the entire reading and describes the core energy surrounding the question.
2
Position 2: Crossing Influence
The card in this position of the spread shows what interacts with the central issue, that which “crosses” the present. It may indicate a challenge, obstacle, tension, or complicating factor shaping how the situation unfolds.
3
Position 3: Recent Past
The card in this position of the spread reflects recent influences or events that led to the current situation. These energies may still have an impact and remain relevant but are beginning to move into the background.
4
Position 4: Near Future
The card in this position of the spread points to what is beginning to develop next if current patterns continue. It suggests an approaching shift, opportunity, or turning point rather than a fixed result.
5
Position 5: Above / Conscious
The card in this position of the spread reflects your conscious mind, including thoughts, intentions, concerns, plans, or what you believe is most important right now.
6
Position 6: Below / Unconscious
The card in this position of the spread reflects the root causes or underlying influences that may not be fully recognized. It points to subconscious patterns, unspoken needs, motivations, emotional undercurrents, or unseen factors shaping events.
7
Position 7: Self / Internal Influences
The card in this position of the spread reflects your role, or how you are showing up in the situation—what you’re embodying and what is within your control to shift or strengthen. It highlights attitudes, behaviors, strengths, or limitations that are within your capacity to acknowledge or adjust.
8
Position 8: Other / External Influences
The card in this position of the spread reflects what surrounds you, including other people’s influence, environmental conditions, support, pressure, and factors outside your direct control.
9
Position 9: Guidance (Hopes and Fears)
The card in this position of the spread offers guidance that relates to what you desire and what you worry about—often two sides of the same emotional investment in the situation. These hopes and worries can influence perception and decision-making.
10
Position 10: Outcome
The card in this position of the spread reflects the trajectory of the situation based on current momentum. It indicates a direction rather than destiny and can shift with conscious choice.
Interpreting this Spread
Begin with the relationship between Central Issue and Crossing Influence. These two cards form the core dynamic. Notice whether the crossing card supports, challenges, or complicates what is present, and how it changes your understanding of the situation.
Then compare Recent Past and Near Future. These cards show how momentum is shifting. Look for what is continuing, what is resolving, and what is changing direction. Ask what is being carried forward and what is falling away.
Read Above, Conscious alongside Below, Unconscious to see how intention and motivation interact. Alignment can suggest clarity and follow through. Tension can suggest inner conflict, blind spots, or needs that have not been fully named.
Then compare Self, Internal Influences with Other, External Influences. These cards show how your agency meets conditions around you. Notice what is within reach to change and what must be navigated rather than controlled.
Finally, read Guidance, Hopes and Fears in context with Outcome. The guidance position shows what you are invested in and how that investment may color the reading. The outcome shows a likely direction if nothing changes. Use the full spread to see where awareness and choice can shift the trajectory.
More About this Spread
Structure of the Celtic Cross
The Celtic Cross can be read as two sections, a central cross and a vertical staff. The cross, cards 1 through 6, focuses on the immediate situation. It describes what is active now, what crosses it, what influenced it, what is developing next, and the conscious and unconscious forces at play. The staff, cards 7 through 10, adds perspective. It describes your role, external influences, emotional investment, and the direction the situation is moving toward.
A Note on Tradition and Variation
The Celtic Cross is taught in many forms, and there is no single universally agreed order for every position. Different books and teachers may label or sequence positions in slightly different ways. That variation is normal. Spreads are tools, not laws. What matters is choosing a structure before the reading and interpreting the cards consistently within it. The version used here is a commonly taught approach that emphasizes flow through time, awareness, and influence.
